Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on UN General Assembly “to deny the United States any perceived benefit from its unlawful unilateralism” during a speech in New York City on Wednesday.

“The United States is also punishing those who seek to fulfil their obligations under Security Council Resolution 2231, which calls for normalisation of economic relations with Iran,” Zarif said while speaking at the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

“This is the first time in the history of the United Nations that a Permanent Member of the Security Council punishes countries for observing a resolution of the Security Council; unheard of," he continued.

“To defend multilateralism, it is imperative to deny the United States any perceived benefit from its unlawful unilateralism, and to forcefully reject any pressure it brings to bear on others to violate international law, Security Council resolutions, and multilateralism in general,” Zarif said.

On Monday, the US moved forward to reduce Iran's oil exports, after it refused to extend waivers granted to China, Japan, South Korea, Turkey and India on their imports of Iranian oil which were granted when sanctions were reimposed by the Trump administration in 2018, following its departure from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA).
