A Double-edged Blade

Satan makes a person hasty. He says, “You will lose it!” On the other side, God says, “You won’t lose anything. Don’t be afraid. I have everything. I’ll give you whatever you want.”

One of a person’s tendencies is towards haste. Whatever people want, besides the fact that they want it, they want it hastily. This haste and rushing, which we have in all of our interests, ruins our deeds. What can be seen along with all of our bad vices is haste. Usually you can’t find a bad tendency, which has led to a bad deed without any haste in it.

“Man prays for ill as [avidly as] he prays for good, and man is overhasty.” (Qur’an 17:11) Since people are hasty, they see their good and bad confusedly and mistakenly. Something that is harmful for a person, he or she says, “This is in my favour. I want it.” This person either asks for it from God, plans to get it in this world, or asks for it from others. This is exactly what is harmful for you. Why don’t you differentiate correctly? It has been said it’s due to his or her haste.

For example, it has been said in the traditions that when some people pray, they are in a hurry to go and do their work. So, they don’t recite the recommended prayers, and “God says, ‘Where did My servant go? Why was My servant in a hurry? What did they want to gain? Shall I destroy whatever they wanted to gain?”

The root of haste in a person is not something bad. You show God that you want to pray on time. They give so much value to your deed that they will help you reach the top, even if the prayer is without paying attention or done lethargically. God says, “His prayer is valuable.” Why? Because he or she showed enthusiasm.

So, the existence of haste in a person is not something bad. But, a person should find how to use it. Interestingly, if it is used in a good way, it will bring all the bliss of this world and the hereafter. If it is used in a bad way, it will bring all misfortune for a person. It’s a double-edged blade.

When does haste harm and confuse a person so that he can’t distinguish between good and evil? When a person is using this haste in a bad place, and not in a good place. If he or she uses it in a good place, it is actually very good too.

In that case, God must calm him or her and say, “My servant, My dear! Ok, I will take you to Myself. Wait. Be patient.” God consoles a person. Due to his enthusiasm to meet God, he is being rewarded each moment too. Also, due to his enthusiasm to meet God, he will see everything in a better way.

Friends, I’ll tell you. You will never lose any enjoyment. Don’t be afraid. They will give you what has been destined for you. A poem says, “If you don’t take it, they will give it to you by force.” Don’t rush. These are Satan’s whisperings. The cursed Satan says, “You will lose it!” He rushes a person. Firstly, is haste something bad that exists in us? No. It is a very good thing. God hasn’t put anything bad in us at all.

But, when a person doesn’t train himself correctly, he will use his good assets in a bad way. When you use your haste in a good way, it will be enthusiasm for meeting God. It will be the Commander of the Faithful, Ali’s (‘a), crying for not being martyred.
