Utair Boeing 737 engine catches fire on runway just before takeoff

The engine on a Utair Boeing 737 flight from Moscow to Makhachkala caught fire on the runway just before takeoff at Vnukovo airport on Wednesday.

Video filmed by a passenger shows flames being emitted from the right engine. The passengers demanded that the flight be stopped. Several passengers, reportedly, opened the emergency exit and walked out on to the right wing, before returning back to the cabin at the request of crew members.

According to the airline, an airflow interruption caused flames to burst from the engine as it was spinning up before takeoff.

“The situation is normal, the plane is fully operational and nothing threatened the passengers’ safety. In accordance with flight regulations, the flight will be operated on another plane,” the airline’s press stated.
