The Most Lovable Person in the World

A poem says, “Whether you repel me or call me close to yourself, it doesn’t matter. Look at anyone that you want. A flower doesn’t have a front or back.”

No one in this world has the ability to make hearts burn as much as Ali bin Abi Talib (‘a) does. “But, he hasn’t made my heart burn very much!” “You haven’t let him. Let him.” No matter how much you love the Commander of the Faithful, go work on it. You can love him more.

The Commander of the Faithful (‘a) was coming back from a battle. People told him, “That person who loved you very much passed away.” They meant, “That certain person who was one of your friends passed away.” They wanted to give him the news. Suddenly, the Imam murmured something and people heard it. It was recorded in history. He said, “If a mountain loves me, it will crumble.” (Nahj al-Balaghah, saying no. 111)

No one in this world has the ability to make hearts burn as much as Ali bin Abi Talib (‘a) does. If we are not crumbling, the reason is one of the following. Either we don’t love Imam Ali (‘a) as much as we should, or it has been destined that we live longer. God keeps us and says, “Don’t die for now.”

There was a black slave. People brought him and said, “O Commander of the Faithful, he stole something.” The Imam said, “Have you stolen something? In this way and that way?” He replied, “Yes.” The Imam said, “Don’t confess, or I will cut off your fingers right now.” He replied, “I stole something.” The Imam tried to show him a way to avoid his hand being cut, “Repent. Don’t tell me the whole story.” He replied, “No, I have done this.” He firmly confessed in front of everyone. So, the Imam had to do it. What could he do? The Imam said, “Bring your hand.” And, he cut his fingers. Then, he gave him the fingers. There wasn’t a hospital around at that time to stich or bandage his wound. His fingers were bleeding. He had pain. He was crying and walking.

One of those who had lost their faith (Khawarij) said, “Ha! Who has cut your fingers?!” He wanted to pull him towards himself. This crafty man was political. He wanted to use him against Imam Ali (‘a). He said, “Ha! Who has cut your fingers? Did you see how brutal he is?!” The man replied, “My Master has done it! Ali bin Abi Talib has done it! The leader of the believers, the refuge of the believers, and the successor of the Prophet has done it!” While crying he said, “If he had cut my neck, I would have let him!”

He praised Ali (‘a). His hand was in pain, but he was praising Ali (‘a)! This other man ran to Ali and said, “What have you done?! You have cut his hand! But, he is praising you!” The Commander of the Faithful (‘a) replied, “Haven’t you heard that the Prophet said, ‘My dear Ali, if a person loves you, even if you strike his nose with your sword for him to hate you, he won’t. Your love won’t leave his heart. And even if you pile all the wealth of the world before a hypocrite for him to love you, he will not.’” (Nahj al-Balaghah, saying no. 45)

No one in this world has the ability to make hearts burn as much as Ali bin Abi Talib (‘a) does. No matter how much you love the Commander of the Faithful, go work on it. You can love him more.
