This is part of an on-going project. During today's testing we are trying to run a modified 8 hp single cylinder gas engine that has been converted to run on steam. It is connected to a 2 hp 3600 rpm 3 phase induction electric motor, that is wired for 230 volt three phase. However, the third phase line is tied off and we have connected the motor to 230 volt single phase. This is the standard house hold voltage. The steam engine is now used to start the electric induction motor and bring the motor above the rated speed of 3600 rpm. We have the speed of the steam engine at 1200 rpm with a 3x speed reduction between the generator and the engine. Then the electrical is connected to the grid and the steam motor is slowed and labors to turn the electric motor faster than the grid speed of 60 hrtz. This effectively make the motor into a grid tied generator. The sine wave is pure sine without THD and the entire system is grid tied without messing around with DC batteries or inverter drives. During this test we were producing approximately 1400 watts.
