The First day of the Somme
1 July 1916
British soldiers moved across no man's land, on the 1st of July at 7:30 in the morning.
They were soon hit by machine guns and explosive shells as they progressed towards the German line.
The advance was soon halted because of barbed wire and heavily defended trenches.
