U.S. Navy Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) students go through hyper-realistic training, including combat scenarios, shipboard emergency scenarios, and prolonged care scenarios, at Strategic Operations (STRATOPS) in San Diego, as part of their IDC training at Surface Warfare Medical Institute (SWMI). IDCs are specialized hospital corpsmen and serve at diverse duty stations in the Navy from Surface Ships, Sea Bees, Special Warfare units such as the SEALs or Expeditionary Warfare and also billets with the Fleet Marine Force. These Sailors serve on land or sea alongside Navy and Marine Corps warfighters, and at isolated duty stations where no medical officer is assigned (such as submarines). More info:
