The tenth one is something else!

There is a tradition in Tuhaf al-Oqul narrated from Imam Reza (‘a). Are my friends ready to hear it? The Imam (‘a) said, “The wisdom of no Muslim will be complete unless he has these ten features: Everyone expects to see good from him. No one expects to see bad from him. If another person does a small good deed, he considers it to be a lot. If he himself does a good deed, he considers it to be little.” He says, “I didn’t do anything.” He really believes this!

The tradition continues, “He doesn’t get tired of others asking him for their needs. He doesn’t get tired of seeking knowledge throughout his whole life. Being poor because of God is dearer to him than being rich. Being abject because of God is dearer to him than being dear to His enemies.” When blamed when doing something because of God he says, “That’s fine. I’ll accept this.” This is dearer to him than him becoming dear by being enemies with God.

The tradition continues, “He prefers anonymity to fame.” “Ashha” means he likes this more. He prefers anonymity. These are outstanding features. Friends, do you agree? I’m not talking about their relative amounts. Friends, in general, do you agree with this?

The tenth one is left. The tradition continues, “The tenth one, and what’s the tenth one?!” So the tenth one is different from the other nine features. I read these from the text for you to taste those features. Then, you can see that in comparison with what outstanding features Imam Reza (‘a) said, “The tenth one, and what’s the tenth one?!” People asked, “What is the tenth one?” The Imam (‘a) replied, “Whomever he sees he says, ‘He is a better and more pious person than I am.’” One might ask, “How can I say everyone is better than me?! Many aren’t better than me. You are pushing and insisting that I say everyone is better than me.”

The Imam (‘a) gave two reasons for this, “People are of two kinds. Some people are better and more pious than him, and some are worse and lower than him.” You should say, “Everyone is better than me.” How can one say this? The Imam (‘a) said, “People are two groups. Either they are better than you, or they are worse than you.” What should you say about those who are worse than you? “When he sees a person who is worse and lower than him…” How should he say that person is better?

The Imam (‘a) continued, “Maybe his goodness is within him, and this way was better for him (to appear bad).” I don’t know. What should a person think about himself? The Imam (‘a) continued, “My goodness can be seen, but this is not good for me.”

I’m always arrogant about being a good person. This is related to which part of a person’s heart for Imam Reza (‘a) to say, “The tenth one, and what’s the tenth one”?! My dear ones, may I be sacrificed for you. This one is the foundation to accepting Guardianship. This makes a person humble. Imam Reza (‘a) explains its logic for you so that God willing you will be convinced. This is a very important part for accepting Guardianship.

The Imam (‘a) continued, “If a person does this, his honour will increase. And his good deeds will become pure!” Can we have an unclean good deed?! Yes! “And his good deeds will become pure! He will be remembered in a good way. He will be a leader for the people of his own time.”

Some friends who were studying at Islamic seminaries asked me, “What is the factor for being successful in propagating religion?” I had had some discussions and talks there. I said, “I think that one of the ways for propagating religion is to say that all the people who are listening to me are better than I am.” And, you should really believe this. Otherwise, you’ll become corrupted.
