Swiss startup company Climeworks launched a plant that is set to extract carbon dioxide from the air and use it for commercial purposes, in the Swiss municipality of Hinwil, Wednesday.
The plant is reportedly the first commercial project that will remove negative emissions by drawing so-called ambient carbon dioxide from its surroundings, using a direct air capture technology.
According to Co-founder of Climeworks Jan Wurzbacher, the major potential customers for extracted carbon dioxide are beverage companies, which use carbon dioxide for carbonated drinks. Wurzbacher noted that other potential customers are renewable fuel companies and greenhouses that could use captured carbon dioxide for the fertilisaiton of plants.
The company has reportedly set a goal of capturing one percent of global carbon dioxide emissions by 2025, which Wurzbacher said would require some 250,000 similar plants to be in operation. Wurzbacher noted that "according to the Paris agreement and the underlining IPCC models, mid of the century we need to remove five to ten billion tonnes of CO2 from the air every year in order to achieve the two-degree global-warming target."
